Vitamin Supplementation - The 5 Basic Truths

There are so many confusing recommendations regarding vitamin supplementation
including benefits, costs, and price. Here are 5 basic truths to help dispell the myths and confusion.
How Magnesium Supports Your Body's Health
By Colin Albert

When it comes to every organ in the body (especially the muscles, heart, and kidneys), magnesium is a mineral that provides never-ending benefits. Numerous advantages come when one maintains daily-recommended amounts, which are either achieved through diet or supplementation.
Without magnesium, enzymes stay inactive; the production of energy is hindered; and the regulation of calcium, potassium, copper, and many other nutrients in the body are affected.
Today, the majority of people living in the United States are not receiving enough magnesium through their diet, as the mineral is especially found in whole unprocessed foods. However, to greatly boost magnesium in the body by choosing specific dietary sources, one should consider adding whole grains, wheat bran, almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, and green leafy vegetables to their meals.
Additional foods that contain magnesium include baked potatoes (with skin), oatmeal, bananas, spinach, peanuts, and even chocolate. When cooking meals, an assortment of spices and herbs also supply magnesium, including sage, cocoa powder, tarragon, poppy seed, coriander, basil, and dill weed.
When looking for a magnesium supplement to accommodate a diet, the local pharmacy or grocery store provides many different forms, including magnesium citrate, magnesium gluconate, and magnesium lactate. It is suggested to choose options that include a time-release formula, which elevates the overall absorption of the mineral. Other sources of magnesium are additionally found in laxatives and antacids (magnesium hydroxide), and bath tonics (magnesium sulfate) that are absorbed through the skin.
Benefits of Taking Magnesium
Once a suitable approach towards increasing magnesium levels is found, the treatment and prevention of a wide range of conditions and medical concerns begin. Maintaining healthy amounts of magnesium in the body may lead to beneficial effects regarding the following ailments:
* Asthma and Emphysema: A study regarding more than 2,500 children (ages 11 to 19) revealed that a low dietary magnesium intake might translate into a higher risk of developing asthma. The same results appeared in a study of more than 2,600 adults between the ages of 18 and 70.
* Diabetes: Low levels of magnesium in the blood have been linked to type-2 diabetes. Some patients have shown an improvement in the action of insulin and enjoyed decreased blood sugar levels when taking magnesium supplements, where results were especially noticeable among the elderly.
* Attention Deficit (and Hyperactivity) Disorder: Children with ADD/ADHD who have received magnesium supplements have shown improvement in their behavior. One study revealed that 95% of the children suffering from ADHD were magnesium deficient. Nowadays, it is common to see doctors recommend magnesium supplementation, or a significant increase of magnesium in the diet.
* Fibromyalgia: A reduction in pain and tenderness associated with fibromyalgia has taken place in patients who have taken medication containing both magnesium and malic acid. The overall results have varied depending on the individual.
* Heart Disease: There is no doubt that magnesium plays an important role regarding the health of the heart. Taking the mineral helps maintain a normal heart rhythm and is a popular treatment suggestion for patients who possess an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia).
* Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): Scientific proof suggests that taking magnesium supplements works wonders on providing relief for women suffering the symptoms linked to PMS, such as bloating, swollen legs, weight gain, and tender breasts.
Additionally, magnesium has been linked to lowering high blood pressure, boosting energy in HIV patients, preventing flare-ups of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), lowering the risk of miscarriage in women, preventing bone loss in women undergoing menopause, treating migraine headaches, combating osteoporosis, lowering the risk of stroke, and treating the insomnia associated with restless leg syndrome.
So the benefits of including a sufficient amount of magnesium in one's diet - through either the foods eaten or via supplements - are both abundant and easy to achieve.

What is Fucoxanthin? Can It Be Used For Weight Loss?
By Orville Campbell, MD

Brown Seaweed contains Fucoxanthin which is a pigment that gives the seaweed its brown color. Fucoxanthin helps the seaweed to convert sunlight energy into chemical energy. Fucoxanthin is being studied for the purposes of weight loss and cancer fighting ability. Fucoxanthin is used in Asian cuisine such as soups and salds. Brown seaweed is at times used in sushi.
Fat Burning?*
Rat studies have shown that Fucoxanthin may increase a protein in rats that causes fat to burn at a faster rate.
Heart Healthy?*
Of special note is that rats fed Fucoxanthin and soybean oil had an increase in the levels of an omega-3 fatty acid. This omega 3 fatty acid is called DHA. This increase was measured in the liver.
Cancer
Some research has shown that Fucoxanthin reduces the viability (ability to live) of some lines of human colon cancer cells. Read about this research in this article: Hosokawa, M. and others, Biochim Biophys Acta. 2004; 1675(1-3):113-9.
Final Words
Fucoxanthin is a promising nutritional supplement. Research continues in the areas of weight loss, cancer fighting, and omega-3 fatty acid levels. The studies involving fat-burning involves Fucoxanthin raising the level of a protein called UCP1 that can burn fat (fat oxidation) at a faster rate in animal studies. Before starting any nutritional supplement, you should consult with your health care provider. This is especially true if you are on any prescribed medicines.

Fish Oil And Concentration
By David McEvoy

According to the National Statistics Online website, more children are being diagnosed with attention deficit disorders in the UK and around the world. What's more shocking to many people is that fact that adults too are being seen with these forms of concentration impairment. Is this something that has happened as our modern lives are speeding up or perhaps are we all suffering from some sort of nutritional deficit that might be causing these issues to occur? This is the question that many scientists are asking and the results might be surprising.
What are Concentration Issues?
Most of us have had some point in our lives where we've felt disorganized or completely unable to concentrate on the task at hand. Maybe we've been under a lot of stress or our health has been poor - in any case, sometimes we've all felt like we could use a little more concentration power. Many times we can remedy the problem with more sleep and a change in our eating habits, but when it seems like none of the traditional methods are working or that your problems with concentration are worse than just being unable to focus some of the time, you may need additional help.
Concentration issues can lead to poor behaviour in school, as in the case of children, in addition to low grades and problems with information retention. In adults, concentration issues can show themselves as problems with job performance as well as in troubles with relationships and in their personal mental health state. By being a constant state of stress because you can't focus on the things you need to do, it can be difficult to achieve a life that seems normal to you. You might always feel behind or like you just can't seem to keep up with everyone else.
What Causes Concentration Issues?
The trick with concentration is that the cause is not nearly as simply as it seems. Many people would tell someone with concentration issues to simply work harder - but it's not that simple. Concentration issues stem from problems within the nervous system. When the nerves and synapses aren't firing correctly, the messages that the brain is sending and receives aren't transmitted at the most efficient speed. In the brain, there are electrical impulses that are sent whenever the brain is sending a message or when something else is causing the brain to receive a message (as in the case of burning a hand. That pain signal is sent through the nervous system to the brain in order to tell your hand to move from the heat source).
These electrical messages can have troubles getting to the brain quickly when the electrical impulse doesn't get to the synapses in the neural network. Better put, think of this system as pouring water into a glass. When the water is running, all is well, but when there is something blocking the source of water, the glass does not fill.
How Does Fish Oil Help with Concentration?
Since fish oil contains essential fatty acids, the body is going to be getting nutrients it can not make on its own. These fatty acids are necessary in order for the nervous system to function properly as well as to help the messages get from one place to another. A study done in 2004 in the UK showed that students who took fish oil supplements as a part of their education actually improved their test scores as well as their behaviour within three months of supplementation.
Other studies have concluded that fish oil supplementation is also helpful then the brain is actively developing, as in when the child is still n the womb or in the younger years of development. The brain forms into an organ that can maintain a higher level of concentration as seen in test results and teacher reports.
But then again, this does not mean that children are the only ones that can benefit from taking fish oil supplements. Adults that are on Ritalin or other concentration boosting drugs have often found that fish oil can actually replace the traditional forms of medication or supplement other therapies with great results.
Where Can You Find Fish Oil Supplements?
There are a number of ways to add fish oil to a diet that are easy and convenient. With fish oil supplements, a person can easily take the recommended dosage three times a day, while adding a few servings of fish to the diet each week will also help to keep the essential fatty acid levels, high. These supplements can be found at online retailers as well as in local grocers.
Conclusion
The benefits of fish oil go far beyond increasing concentration, but one fact remains - studies have shown time and time again that fish oil is something that can help boost the brain as well as the intelligence of those that decide to make the supplement a part of their lives.

Nutritional Supplements - Should You Be Taking A Dietary Supplement?
By Jason M Paulsone

There are many supplements out there in the marketplace nowadays and it can be confusing sometimes as to whether or not they are worth taking. The fact is that most people have diets that are simply not providing their body with the necessary nutrients that they need. We are all aware that we need to be consuming more fruits and vegetables but the reality is that most people for whatever reason are not doing it. Thus consuming some sort of nutritional supplement is often an ideal choice to introduce the necessary vitamins and minerals back into the system for optimal health.
Supplements can be found today very easily at most supermarkets and even online at places like Amazon or other nutritional sites. Choosing the right supplement for you can be a confusing task as there are so many different options. It is often a good idea to consult with a doctor first to make sure that the product you intend to consume is compatible with any prescription drugs that you may be taking.
It is important to keep in mind that just because you are taking a nutritional supplement it does not all of a sudden give you a license to eat whatever you want. You still need to make sure you are consuming the right kinds of foods and not over indulging. Moderation is the key here so you can consume almost any food but keep the amounts minimal for those high fat or junk foods.
There are many great super foods out there that you can consume that can offer great health benefits. Whole food supplements such as green drinks are concentrated nutritional supplements and can give your body a huge boost of nutrients. The great thing about most whole food supplements is that they are made of regular foods only more concentrated so there really are no nasty side effects.
Another benefit to whole food supplements is that they give your body an array of vitamins and minerals that you would not get with isolated supplements so you can save money by only using this kind of nutritional supplementation. Food can offer you a great way to stay healthy and in fact can be used to help heal your body. Use it to keep you healthy and strong and control your urges to over eat or consume too much of the wrong kinds of foods. It is tough to develop this discipline but I think you will agree that the health benefits may make it very worth while.

Ester C - Regular Vitamin C's Alternative
By Jimson Lee

"Honey, Where is my Ester C?"
You've seen the billboard ads: a person with a red runny nose and tissues asking for his favorite remedy.
The season of common colds is approaching and people are concerned with preventing or lessening the effects of the common cold.
Yes, we all know the basics. Only building your immune system can helps prevent the common cold. So, sleep well, eat a healthy diet high in vitamins and minerals, exercise in moderation and maintain an ideal body weight. Also limit stress, alcohol, smoking, and temperature extremes. Washing hands regularly after contact with people and especially before touching your own eyes, nose and mouth.
But who lives under those conditions with the holidays season approaching? For those of us who don't, research has suggested that vitamin C can boost the immune system in people under some type of stress. Vitamin C is an excellent antioxidant as it can protect and repair the cells and tissues (i.e. collagen) in the body.
Ester C is a type of Vitamin C. While Ester C offers all the benefits of regular Vitamin C combined with Calcium, but it also offers an improved absorption rate and is gentle on the stomach.
Ester C: the Vitamin C that's gentler on the stomach
Vitamin C was isolated in 1928. It is known as ascorbic acid. It is the acidity that leads traditional vitamin C to cause stomach agitation in people who are sensitivity to acidity, such as pregnant women. This stomach agitation led to the invention of Ester C some twenty five years ago.
An Arizona physician named Edwin Goertz, MD, discovered Ester-C while seeking help for his arthritic wife. Goertz's spouse couldn't tolerate traditional forms of vitamin C because it upset her stomach. So he came up with the idea of mixing water, ascorbic acid and calcium ascorbate to arrive at a non-acidic alternative that he dubbed "Ester-C". Ester-C has a neutral pH that helps protect you from the stomach upset that can accompany other Vitamin C products.
Ester C: Vitamin C with improved absorption and retention
Ester-C is the most advanced form of Vitamin C available. It has been specially formulated for faster absorption and retention so you can obtain the maximum benefits of vitamin C quickly. By "esterfying" Vitamin C with calcium and bioflavanoids, this formula is estimated to be absorbed 400% faster than regular Vitamin C.
In an animal trial, two groups were fed equal amounts of either ascorbic acid or Ester C. They tested the blood and urine levels of Vitamin C for four hours. The animals fed the Ester C had higher blood levels of Vitamin C, suggesting better absorption in comparison to normal Vitamin C.
Research suggests the availability of Ester C seems to indicate it is different from that of normal Vitamin C, and it is appears to benefit from the presence of the threonate and other Vitamin C metabolites, which help improve its absorption to the tissues.
Vitamin C can help some people prevent common colds
As mentioned before, Vitamin C helps people in the more extreme physical conditions, such those as living in rather cold temperature or taking strenuous physical training. For example, Vitamin C helps prevent athletes from coming down with the sniffles. Generally, taking extra Vitamin C does not help most people from catching the common cold.
Vitamin C may help smokers too
Vitamin C supplements can help reduce the high rate of Vitamin E depletion that occurs in smokers. If a person is under oxidative stress, have low Vitamin C intakes, then Vitamin E doesn't do its job as well as it should and gets destroyed. Vitamin C supplements appear to reduce this tendency in smokers.
How much Vitamin C is needed?
Ever since Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling took mega-doses of vitamin C, the medical community has debated the optimal dosage intake of this vitamin. The RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) is 60 mg, however, the optimal daily intake of Vitamin C has not yet been determined. It is not uncommon to find 500mg in standard multi-vitamins, or even 1000mg in effervescent tablets.

Trim Your Waistline With CLA

By Linda Tremer

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a fatty acid, has been shown to reduce abdominal obesity. Published studies have shown that it reduces body fat and increases lean muscle mass. A study in Norway found that people who took 3000 mg of CLA for 3 months had a 20 percent reduction in body fat and a five percent increase in lean muscle.
In a different double blind month long study of 25 men the abdominal diameter (waist measurement) of those taking CLA was significantly reduced. The drop in waist measurement was an average of 1.4 cm. None of the men changed their eating habits or exercise routine during the month long study.
Mice fed CLA had a 60 percent lower body fat compared to the control group. CLA has consistently shown an ability to reduce body fat while maintaining lean muscle mass. When CLA is combined with gaurana the fat burning effects are greatly enhanced and appetite is reduced.
In a 24 month study, subjects lost an average of 4 to 6 pounds following their normal diet and exercise routines. There was no change in the weights of the control group.
The list of benefits of CLA supplementation is long. It improves insulin sensitivity, and may lower LDL cholesterol. It helps maintain healthy cell membranes. CLA has shown some cancer protection properties. It has also shown to be protective against heart disease.
CLA can be found in meat such as beef, lamb and in dairy products like yogurt, and butter. Today there is less CLA in food. Most cows are fattened in feedlots on grains and not on grasses. This has reduced the CLA in milk and meat by 80 percent compared to grass fed cattle. To ensure that you are getting enough CLA from your food eat meat from cattle that are fed grass. Choose meat that is organic. Since many people have decreased their meat and dairy product consumption they are not getting enough CLA from their food. Supplements are necessary. Conjugated linoleic acid capsules can be found at most health food and vitamin stores.
Previous generations consumed more dietary CLA. It has been suggested that a deficiency of CLA in our diet may be the reason for the present day obesity epidemic.
Research has shown that CLA can reduce abdominal fat, increase your fat metabolism and improve insulin sensitivity. Most studies involved taking six 500 mg. capsules of CLA a day on an empty stomach. CLA should be part of all weight loss programs. Consult your doctor before using supplements.

The Side Effects Of Vitamin B12
By Maria Treadaway

This article discusses vitamin B12 and most of the reported side effects of taking B12. It also outlines some of the medical conditions that taking B12 may exacerbate.
Background
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluable vitamin needed for normal cell activity. It is a part of a group of cobalt containing B complex vitamins, which are also known as cobalamins. Like other B vitamins, vitamin B12is important for metabolism. It also helps in the formation of red blood cells and in maintaining the central nervous system. It is found in most foods which come from animal products including liver, fish, shell fish, meat and dairy products.
Side Effects
The good news is that vitamin B 12 is usually non-toxic, even when taken in large doses. However, people have experienced some adverse effects, even though these side effects are quite rare. Generally, when vitamin B12 supplements are taken orally then there is little chance of side effects occurring. Some people choose to take vitamin B12 administered with an injection. This type of ingestion as been associated with the following side effects:
• mild diarrhoea• anxiety and panic attacks• heart palpitations• insomnia• breathing problems• chest pain• skin rash, hives or itchy swollen skin
Some health professionals believe that patients develop these reactions not because of the B12, but because of the preservatives that are part of the injection formula. Currently, most injections contain preservatives. To be on the safe side, it is probably better to take B12 orally.
Medical Conditions
Other side effects may be experienced by people who have an allergy or a sensitive to cobalamin and cobalt. If this is the case, then it is advisable to avoid vitamin B12 supplementation altogether and instead seek to eat the foods that contain naturally occurring B12. In addition B12 should be avoided by people suffering from Leber's disease, a hereditary disease in which the optic nerve wastes away. Ingesting vitamin B12 can actually speed up the atrophy of the optic nerve resulting in rapid loss of central vision.
There is also evidence to suggest that patients who have undergone heart surgery and received coronary stents may have an increased risk of the artery narrowing again when they take vitamin B12. A small risk, but one to bear in mind.
On a positive note, pregnant and breastfeeding women can take vitamin B12 quite confidently when it is taken orally in amounts not exceeding the recommended daily allowance (2.6 mcg/day if pregnant and 2.8 mcg/day if breastfeeding)
As can be seen, vitamin B12 is a relatively safe vitamin with very few adverse side effects even when taken in large doses. More problems than not arise from B12 deficiency than they do from ingestion of the vitamin itself.

Nutritional Health Foods for Kids and the Effect on Behavior
By Rolf Rasmusson

After a night of "trick or treating" the amount of sugar in children's bloodstreams is higher than normal. Any parent or elementary school teacher will tell you that sugar clearly effects children's behavior, and will give you anecdotal examples of situations that illustrate this. If you are a parent or teacher, it may surprise you to hear that the effect of sugar intake on children's behavior is a hotly debated topic in pediatrics
The belief that consumption of refined sugar can lead to behavior disturbance or hyperactivity in children is widespread. Wolraich and colleagues reviewed the literature to evaluate this purported association in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The authors conclude that no effect of sugar on behavior or cognitive performance in children has been proved based on studies to date. However, placebo-controlled trials have shown that parents believe sugar has a negative effect on their children's behavior, and this belief may be hard to counter. (Wolraich ML, et al. The effect of sugar on behavior or cognition in children: a meta-analysis. JAM 1995;274:1617-21.)
Having just witness the post Halloween frenzy of a group of five year olds that I know well, it seems hard to believe the study above. Here were a group of children who regularly play together, and though active, are rarely extreme. This Halloween evening they were running in circles around the house for a full hour, screeching and laughing and climbing all over each other and the furniture. Given that this is not the normal behavior for this group of children and given that they'd each eaten at least 4-6 pieces of candy prior to the behavior, it makes logical sense that there's a relationship.
In the literature from more alternative sources, the effect of sugar on behavior has been found to be true. At the Natural Health and Longevity Resource Center website, http://www.all-natural.com/add.html, Dr. Allen Buresz agrees with the importance of nutritional health foods for kids. In an article entitled Attention Deficit Disorder & Hyperactivity Success, Dr. Buresz states, "it's a known fact that the elimination of food additives and refined sugar produces dramatic improvements [in symptoms of ADD & ADHD]."
If you're concerned about diet, nutrition and your child's behavior, a wonderful option is to visit a naturopathic physician. Naturopaths specialize in treating the whole person, and recognize the importance of nutritional health foods for kids. They will spend a large amount of time with you and your child, gathering information on everything from physical symptoms, emotional presentation, diet, sleep, behavior and other areas. From that history and an exam your Naturopathic physician will prescribe some combination of herbs, homeopathic medication, nutritional health foods, nutritional supplements, or specific techniques, to address your child's problem area(s). To learn more about naturopathic physicians and to locate a licensed naturopathic physician in your area, check out the website at www.naturopathic.org.
An important part of a nutritional program for both children and adults is the addition of a liquid nutritional supplement to your diet. Liquid nutritional supplements are more effectively assimilated by the body as compared with pills, which means you get more nutrition for your money with liquid nutritional supplements. Many liquid nutritional supplements actually taste good, which means your children will want to take them. Some recent nutritional health foods are juices which combine a few different fruits, berries and herbs into a good tasting drink. A product like this would be a great nutritional health food for kids, since they would be getting many different types of nutrients in one beverage. Make sure you read the labels on products like this to look for any added sugar or chemicals. Some beverages pose as "healthy", when in fact they are loaded with added sugar.
Adding nutritional health foods for kids to your child's diet can only be beneficial. Even if you are not addressing any specific behavior issues, good nutrition is a wonderful gift to give to your loved ones.

Respitrol Review - Is it Legitimate?
By Mike Leroos

Respitrol claims to restore airflow to full capacity sometimes within 72 hours. This is achieved thanks to a proprietary blend of all natural ingredients that address the root causes of asthma attacks and not just the symptoms. Micronutra, the maker of Respitrol, claims that this peak airflow is achieved naturally and without the side effects of prescription drugs. Further, Respitrol claims a high level of success as evidenced by an independent study commissioned to evaluate its efficacy.
Asthma is a debilitating condition that affects millions. Studies show that in the last 20 years asthmatics have grown by almost 70%. The condition is caused by the restriction of airways that makes breathing difficult. Imagine fighting for every breath of life giving air! There are many triggers that can spark an attack. Some of those triggers are exercise, stress, cold temperatures and various allergies. Attacks vary in intensity and duration but they are characterized by wheezing and coughing. The lack of oxygen gives the asthmatic a sensation of slowly drowning that can be very frightening and stressful, often exacerbating the attack. Many asthmatics are turning to natural supplements to complement or replace their prescription treatments. These long term prescription treatments can have severe side effects that many are trying to avoid. Respitrol is one of the most popular natural supplements used in a long term plan to normalize breathing and control asthma.
The first claim is that Respitrol is made of all natural ingredients and has no side effects. Here are some of the ingredients found in this natural supplement:
This is a partial list of ingredients but we can see that they are indeed natural. A quick search online for these three ingredients found no significant side effects.

Ghatti Gum: This is an extract from a tree in India. This substance has critical ingredients in promoting a healthy immune system.
Tragacanth Gum: This is sap from legumes. It is a polysaccharide whose active ingredient flushes toxins that cause asthma.
Aloe Vera extract: This substance has many benefits including cell growth stimulation. On this basis we can say that the claim made by Respitrol that it is all natural and has no side effects is believable.
The next claim is that it is 86% effective in reducing asthma symptoms. This is supported by an independent lab study involving 14 patients. These patients were monitored for three to six months. A final evaluation showed an 86 % reduction in symptoms and a reduction of 72 % of other medications taken. How To Choose A Good Vitamin Supplement Store?
By Eddy Kong

There are many ways to buy vitamins. In fact there are 2 major ways. One being the ability to go onto the internet and make your purchases, and another traditional way is to drop by your neighbor store to shop for your favorite supplements.
However, before you actually go online or go to your favorite shop, you need to do some research and find some information online. There are many people prefer to search and find information online. This is the quickest and the most comfortable way to do it.
For example, for those of you who need vitamins, but you are not sure what kind (depending on the problem you are looking to solve), it is a really simple to process to type in your symptoms, find what it is, and do a self diagnosis (although this isn't always recommended) and from that find vitamin supplements online to treat it effectively. This way, I am sure you will find the right vitamins and go to your favorite vitamin supplement store to get it.
What you need to take note?
Making sure the vitamin supplements are sealed properly? The answer is WRONG!
There are many people don't realize is that vitamin supplements are not regulated like drugs. They are regulated like food.
What that means is that unless and until a problem arises, the only thing we're going to know about the product is what the manufacture would want us to know.
Although the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the FDA work hand in hand on issues such as false claims, they usually don't get involved until after there's a problem. In addition, unlike drugs, vitamin supplements don't have to be tested or offer any proof before marketing. Between 2002 and 2004, the FDA seized more than nine million dollars worth of dietary supplements including vitamin supplements that were either labeled with false claims or were unapproved drugs disguised as supplements.
Even if a supplement claims to be all natural, it can interfere with medication you are already taking or a medical condition you have. That's why knowing your vitamin supplement store is very important in getting the right vitamins.
Once you know the vitamin supplement store's name and physical address, you can check with the Better Business Bureau in that city to see if there are any complaints that have been filed with them and if there are, are these complaints been resolved. It is also easier to search the FTC and FDA websites for any disciplinary action when you have contact information.
Therefore, whether you are purchasing from any vitamin supplement store, whether online or brick and mortar, use your common sense and do your homework to ensure your safety. Regularly check the FDA and FTC websites if you have further questions or concerns about vitamin supplements or the stores in which you purchase them.
This way, you've saved yourself time, you've saved yourself money, and you've got the exact vitamin supplement you're looking for. Of course, you are guaranteed that you are able to consume the vitamin supplements in absolute peace.

Is Melatonin Really the Youth Hormone?
By Ann Stewart

Melatonin is a growth hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland in your brain, and circulating in your bloodstream. It is secreted at night or in the dark to regulate your sleeping cycle, and plays a significant role in maintaining sleep-wake rhythms.
It is considered to be the most powerful natural antioxidant our bodies produce and it can affect every cell. As well, it is also an anti-depressant, anti-aging agent, and it regulates both the immune system and sexual functions. Furthermore, it plays a key role in memory and learning capacity. Because of all these wonderful attributes, marketers of the supplement variety dubbed it the "youth hormone."
When there's not enough of it in a woman's system, the ovaries will respond by producing extra estrogen and other female sex hormones which in turn can activate cancerous or potentially cancerous cells in the breasts. It even seems to inhibit tumor growth.
The supplemental form of melatonin is used to treat insomnia in people who are either having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. They help normalize the body's internal clock in blind people, those suffering from jet lag, and shift workers who work nights and sleep during the day. It may improve sleep in asthma sufferers and also abdominal pain in irritable bowel syndrome patients with sleep disturbances. Sleep disorders can affect a person's quality of life and job performance, causing decreased productivity, motor vehicle and industrial accidents, and even medical errors. There are two main classifications of insomnia: primary and secondary sleep disorders.
The primary sleep disorders can be caused by stress or too much caffeine. Melatonin supplements, however, do not significantly help persons with this type of disorder, regardless of age, type of primary sleep disorder, dose, or length of treatment.
Secondary sleep disorders tend to be triggered by underlying neurological or mental conditions. Some of these disorders are psychoses, mood and anxiety disorders, dementia, Parkinson's disease, and chronic pulmonary disease. Here, too, the supplements have no impact whatsoever, regardless of age, dosage or duration of the treatment.
Despite all the excellent qualities of melatonin, the supplemental variety falls far short of the stuff your body produces naturally. The supplemental variety, whether "natural" or synthetic, doesn't work for everyone. There is little scientific evidence that it either promotes health or treats disease.
Since these products are not regulated by a government agency, their purity, safety and effectiveness cannot be verified. Approximately half of the people taking it for any condition notice an improvement.
It must be noted here that melatonin supplements do have many side effects. These include slower reaction times, "heavy" heads and stomachs, and persistent drowsiness throughout the day. For these reasons the use of machinery or vehicles should be delayed for several hours after taking it. The weaker a person's immune system, the more severe the side effects! Doctors, therefore, do not recommend melatonin for people with mental illness, severe allergies or cancer.
As it also increases the risk of blood clotting, it should not be taken if you are using Coumadin or similar medications to reduce clotting, or have a clotting disorder. The supplements also may cause abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting, and can possibly bring on hallucinations or paranoia. Those who are pregnant or breast-feeding, depressed, suffering from either an auto-immune disease or a hormonal one such as diabetes should definitely not use this supplement!
So, if it is supposed to be so great, what gives? The secret is within you, my friend! Melatonin is manufactured in your own body! You really don't need a supplemental facsimile! What you need is the power to reactivate your sluggish pineal gland to produce precisely all the melatonin your unique body needs! No guessing and no external agents that can upset the delicate balance of your immune system!
Always and in everything do your own due diligence. Doctors do not have all the nutritional answers, nor are all supplements created equal. The information in this article is simply informational. You really can get your youth back and discover a youth makeover! Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Prosper and be in health!

The Importance Of Water Soluble Vitamins
By Rolf Rasmusson

Today's fast-paced lifestyle, including fast foods, cell phones, long commutes to the workplace, has made vitamins and nutritional supplements more important than ever before. So, what major role do these supplements play in our lives? Which ones should we be taking? Where do we get the best ones? What's the difference between water soluble and fat soluble vitamins and why is water soluble better for us? Following is a brief list of water soluble vitamins and their benefits.
Water soluble vitamins break down most quickly and are then absorbed into the bloodstream. These water soluble vitamins include Vitamin C, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and folic acid.
Vitamin C - is found in a number of forms including Ascorbic Acid, Acerbate, Buffered C and Ester C. Vitamin C builds collagen and other connective tissue and is a most powerful antioxidant. C also helps us to maintain proper immunity against disease. Vitamin C is found in many citrus fruits and vegetables.
Vitamin B1 - is also known as Thiamin and can be found in sunflower seeds, kidney and navy beans, brown rice, whole wheat flour and organ meats. A lack of Vitamin B1 can lead to Beri Beri. It is also needed to break down alcohol.
Vitamin B2 - is also called Riboflavin. It can be found in milk, meat, fish poultry, eggs and broccoli. B2 is a great antioxidant.
Vitamin B3- is also known as Niacin. It is very important for maintaining a healthy heart and healthy blood lipids. Because it dilates the blood vessels it can cause a flush. Niacin is available in Nicotinic acid, Niacin amide and Inositol Hexaniacinate.
Vitamin B5 - is also known as Panthotenic acid. B5 is good for adrenal function and the Krebs cycle. Some find it helpful for acne, to boost the performance of athletes and helpful with lupus. It can be found in grains, liver, salmon, yeast, dairy and eggs.
Vitamin B6 - Is important in more than 100 different enzymatic reactions. It is helpful in lipid metabolism, nervous system functions and neurotransmitter syntheses. Commonly found in a supplement called Pyridoxine HCI, it can also be found in seeds, potatoes, garbanzo beans, soy beans and chicken breasts.
Vitamin B12 - is also known as methylcobalamin or cyanocobalamin and is a very important vitamin and supplement. Vitamin B12 can be found in dairy products, organ meats, kidney, heart, clams, oysters, seafood, muscle meats and egg yolks. Lack of Vitamin B12 can lead to psychological symptoms, fatigue, weakness and weight loss. It is also important for the production of red blood cells and DNA syntheses.
Folic Acid - is not considered a vitamin but is important and often supplemented with the VB vitamins. Folic Acid is necessary for maturing red and white blood cells and also for DNA synthesis It can be found in fruits such as pineapple, strawberries, bananas, boysenberries, plus green leafy vegetables, starchy vegetables, bean sprouts, wheat germ flakes, milk, kidney, liver and brewer's yeast.
There is so much more to learn about these very necessary and powerful molecules. A thoughtful and healthy diet of quality foods is very helpful for giving you what you need. However, you need to learn about and take the very best supplements and vitamins in order to be the best you can be.
